Things to Do in Australia

Things to Do in Australia

Australia is large enough to offer everything that most other places offer, and many more unique experiences besides. Here are some great ideas of things to see and do all over Australia.

Activities

The superb beaches on Australia’s extensive coastline offer excellent sunbathing and swimming along with world-class surfing, a popular Australian sport. Deep sea fishing trips are an exhilarating way to spend time out on the water. Snorkeling and scuba diving are available from boats moored on the Great Barrier Reef as well as from many beaches and cays. The Pacific Ocean is teeming with brightly coloured fish and beautiful corals and anemones. Windsurfing, kite-surfing, jet-skiing and all the usual beach watersports are also available.

The Interior or Outback provides further sporting challenges. The Blue Mountains, among other ranges, are ideal for hillwalking, mountaineering, abseiling and even mountain biking. Wildlife spotting and birdwatching are a pleasure in this unique terrain. The tiny island of Tasmania offers cycling, horse riding and tramping in beautiful unspoilt countryside. Kayaking is also a popular outdoor pursuit. Take a hot-air balloon ride over some of the beautiful inland areas for unrivalled views of this unspoilt terrain.

Unique Experiences in Australia

Sydney offers some great opportunities for once-in-a-lifetime activities. One of the best known is climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge with a guide. You certainly need fine weather and a good head for heights on this trip! Tour behind the scenes of the Sydney Opera House or take a cruise around the harbour. Late May to early December is whale watching season as thousands of humpback whales migrate along the coast.

Visit the fascinating Flying Doctor Museum in Cairns and learn about the Bush Radio, once used by teachers for giving lessons to children in remote villages.

Explore the unique national parks, many of which are in New South Wales. They have an amazing variety of waterfalls, mountains, rivers and natural geological formations as well as plenty of wildlife. Australia has some unique flora which can also be enjoyed at some of the Botanical Gardens located in most major cities.

Visit one of Australia’s many wineries in New South Wales. The Hunter Valley is home to many famous wineries including Rosemount and Lindemans. Guided tours include seeing the trellised vines and follow the processes of picking, crushing, fermenting and bottling before sampling the wines.

Finally, enjoy some of Australia’s finest cuisine. Try ordering Bush Tucker and enjoy the different flavours of smoked emu, crocodile and kangaroo. It is often garnished with a burning strip of eucalyptus bark.
