Queensland
Queensland is the northeasternmost state of Australia running from Brisbane to the tip of Cape York. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the clear Coral Sea and is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical islands, lush rainforest and vibrant cities. It is also the location of the Daintree Rainforest and the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, two of the leading natural wonders of the world. It is considered one of the most scenic and beautiful areas in Australia.
The area was originally occupied by indigenous Australians and more recently the Moreton Bay penal colony was located in the area which later became Brisbane. Queensland was named after Queen Victoria who signed the proclamation separating the state from New South Wales. It now has a population of 4.4 million.
Queensland has been nicknamed Australia’s Sunshine State as it enjoys tropical temperatures throughout the year, although from January to March it also has a typically tropical wet season.
Brisbane is the contemporary urban capital of the state and is currently Australia’s fastest growing city. Cairns is one of the best known destinations, although it is not a particularly large city. This vibrant waterfront city offers the best access to the snorkeling and diving opportunities on the Great Barrier Reef, along with superb sports fishing. The promenade has a saltwater swimming lagoon and a small beach as well as excellent dining venues.
Just offshore, the Whitsunday Islands are 74 jewels in a crystal clear sea. Popular for sailing vacations and in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef with its wealth of marine life, it is an exclusive and unspoilt area to visit.
Cooktown is where Captain James Cook landed in 1770 to repair his badly damaged ship, the Endeavour, as he charted the coastline. It is a delightfully friendly 19th century town with an interesting museum of local artifacts.
Townsville is another popular seafront town which enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine per year, making it popular with vacationers. Further south, the Western Downs and Toowoomba offer pioneering history, tourist drives, museums and plenty of opportunities for bushwalking and bird spotting.
Queensland’s Outback offers an amazing collection of historic towns, national parks, stunning landscapes and gem hunting, known as “gem fossicking”.
