Australia - Home Page
Australia is like nowhere else on the planet. It is the smallest continent, yet the 6th largest country in the world. The population of 22 million is spread around Australia’s 2.9 million square miles (7.6 million km2). As the interior is mostly arid desert called the Outback, most residents live in coastal communities. These include the major cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Cairns as well as the capital, Canberra. The country is divided neatly into 6 states and 2 mainland territories.
Flora and Fauna
Australia has a huge range of indigenous species of wildlife, flora and fauna, mainly due to it being isolated from other countries and continents. Some well-known creatures associated with Australia are the kangaroo, platypus, koala, wombat, crocodile, emu and some of the most venomous snakes and spiders in the world.
Climate
The continent of Australia is so large that there is no “typical” climate. Whilst the northernmost area enjoys a tropical climate, much of the interior is desert or semi-arid land. The southeastern coast and the island of Tasmania have a cooler temperate climate which is where most of the population can be found..
Lifestyle
Australia is buzzing with great experiences. It offers a superb quality of life with good health care, modern infrastructure, transport and communications, despite its cities being well spread out. More than 2 million tourists each year visit the Great Barrier Reef which is considered one of the natural wonders of the world, along with the red rock, Uluru, and the Daintree tropical rainforest. Australia’s beautiful sandy beaches stretch for miles and offer great opportunities for surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, boating, and other watersports.
Facts
One big advantage of visiting Australia is that the national language is English, albeit spoken with a distinctive Australian accent. Cars drive on the left, a throwback to the days of the British Commonwealth, and the currency is the Australian dollar.
